Maritim Resort & Spa Mauritius renovated and extended

Holidays return to the paradise island

“The resort is now simply more beautiful, more authentic and more heavenly than ever before,” enthuses General Manager Peter Edler as he talks about the “new” Maritim Resort & Spa Mauritius.

The lengthy hiatus due to the coronavirus presented the ideal opportunity to undertake an extensive renovation programme at the luxurious 5-star resort, which now boasts 272 rooms and suites. Although it was planned long before the pandemic, the forced shutdown meant it could be completed swiftly. “It proved to be a blessing in disguise for us,” says Peter Edler, who now cannot wait for the guests to return to the tranquil paradise and to extend a warm and luxurious welcome to them at the fabulous resort, alongside the rest of his team. 60 generous rooms have been added to the complex.

The new “Anno 1743” restaurant, built within the historic ruins of Balaclava and housed in the original French mill dating back to 1743, is a further highlight of the finished renovation. “By incorporating the island’s history in this way, we have created a truly unique setting. Our guests are now finally free to enjoy the unparalleled ambiance of the bar, restaurant and rooftop lounge and all it has to offer,” the experienced manager adds happily.

Since 1 October, vaccinated travellers and those who have recovered from Covid have been able to visit the Indian Ocean’s paradise island without the need to quarantine.

The Maritim Resort & Spa is set among tropical gardens on the edge of Turtle Bay, one of the most stunning bays on the sunny north-west of the island. When it opened in 1990, the 25-hectare property was one of the first large hotels on the island and it therefore blends perfectly with its surroundings.

With its sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and spa and beauty treatment rooms, the “Maritim Tropical Flower Spa” offers pure relaxation. It has previously won the “World Luxury Spa” award and has been repeatedly voted the most beautiful spa in Mauritius and the entire Indian Ocean area.

Equally exceptional is the hotel’s own equestrian facility, perfect for long rides along the beach. The island is also home to some considerably slower creatures. For many years, the impressive giant tortoises have roamed the vast hotel grounds, much to the delight of our younger guests who love to admire them from close quarters. The hotel’s daily “Turtle Club” provides even more excitement for the kids.

As well as the hotel’s 9-hole golf course with its stunning backdrop, there are tennis courts and a gym, sailing, surfing, water skiing and a diving school to enjoy, making this the ideal destination for sports enthusiasts.

The fine dining restaurant “Château Mon Désir” is a further resort highlight. For many years, it has been the island’s go-to dining destination for visitors and locals alike, welcoming regular guest residencies from top international chefs. The holiday paradise boasts no fewer than 12 restaurants and bars which cater to all tastes.

“When we opened the Maritim Resort and Spa Mauritius some 30 years ago, we set the standard for the island at a time when Mauritius was only just emerging as a holiday destination. After the difficult and lengthy covid-enforced shutdown, I am delighted that we are now able to restart here with this beautifully modernised hotel. For the Maritim hotel chain and the entire travel industry alike, it is hugely important that people are finally able to travel again safely,” concludes Dr Monika Gommolla, owner and chair of the Maritim Hotels’ supervisory board.
